Top 5 Reasons to check the data from the RUSS unit:

 5. To find out if the temperature is good for swimming

 4. To find the thermocline so I know where to find the trout and salmon.

 3. To look at trends in the turbidity

 2. To know what the dissolved oxygen is at different depths

 1. My teacher is making me do it

The Lake George Association in combination with Darrin Freshwater Institute saw a need for near real time data access for Lake George and those that use and care about the lake. These organizations teamed up with DEC and Upstate Freshwater Institute to write a grant for EPA’s EMPACT (Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking) Program. The three lakes that will be gathering data from the monitoring units in their lakes are: Lake George, Otisco Lake, and Skaneateles Lake.

Remote Underwater Sample Stations or RUSS units have been deployed in each lake to obtain and measure different water quality parameters at various depths. These parameters include: temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductivity, pH, turbidity and chlorophyll. This information is then uploaded to a website where the public can see what is going on in their lake that week.

In addition to obtaining important data, this program has the data available on the website for viewing, as well as important information on your watershed and how you can help keep your lake healthy.
