Drop a Brick on Zebra Mussels Project

End of 2008 Season Summary

We had another great summer of success with the Drop a Brick on Zebra mussels program. We had 8 marinas and 50 individuals report back to us for the summer of 2008 which was an increase from the previous summer. Areas of recording included Lake George Village, Harris Bay, Cotton Point, Echo Bay, and several others in the southern basin and Hague, Silver Bay, Gull Bay and other locations in the north basin. All volunteers reported no zebra mussels on their bricks!

To our Volunteers: Reports came back at the end of the season from only about half of our participants. As a reminder: even if you do not find zebra mussels on your brick at the end of the season, we still need to hear from you! Knowing where zebra mussels are not located is still important information. Also, knowing where we have people monitoring helps us fill in important gaps in areas of the lake where we do not have volunteers monitoring yet.

Even though volunteer reports did not show signs of zebra mussels, it does not mean they are not in Lake George. As of the end of 2008, 25,148 zebra mussels have been found and removed from Lake George by divers from the Darrin Fresh Water Institute and Bateaux Below. From 1999 - 2006 there were only four locations (LG Village, Mossy Point Boat Launch, Cleverdale, and Sandy Bay). Then by the end of 2007, an additional 3 locations (Castaway Marina, Yankee Marina, and Rogers Rock Campground) of adult zebra mussels growing were located. In 2008, two more locations (Treasure Cove and Beckley's Marina) were identified, for a total of 9 known locations overall at the end of 2008.

See map of known zebra mussel locations.

As always, it will be important to check your brick periodically throughout this upcoming summer and call the LGA immediately if you find anything. There are bricks available at the office and the LGA is always looking for more volunteers to help monitor.

Please consider volunteering to drop a brick and monitor for zebra mussels on Lake George next season.
