Winner of Second Annual Lake George Bookmark Design Contest Announced
To promote the concept of individual lake stewardship, and the importance it plays in our overall goal of protecting water quality, the Public Participation & Education Committee of the Lake George Watershed Coalition sought student to develop original artwork for a bookmark for the second annual Lake George Bookmark Design Contest. Bookmark themes could focus on any lake and watershed issues such as pollution, invasive species, aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals, streams and wetlands, and water quality.
The winner of the second annual Lake George Bookmark Design Contest is Kimberly Wright, a 7th grader at Bolton Central School. Her design will be printed on a bookmark that will be distributed to the school and public libraries around Lake George. Kimberly will also receive a free pass for a steamboat ride with lunch on the boat for her and her family, generously donated by Bill Dow of the Lake George Steamboat Company.
All schools that are in at least part of the Lake George Watershed were invited to participate in the contest. Students in grades 4-7 were eligible to draw a bookmark about Lake George. We received 113 entries overall, from 6 different schools. Students from Putnam, Bolton Landing, Whitehall, Lake George, Queensbury, and Ticonderoga all participated. We had so many great entries this year that we also have two honorable mentions that we would like to award. Honorable Mention goes to both Noah Benveniste, a 7th grader at Lake George, and Willa Shakeshaft, a 5th grader at Putnam Central School. Congratulations to all the winners and to all the students who participated – there were some great entries and we could really tell just how much many of you care about protecting Lake George.
The contest is sponsored by the Lake George Watershed Coalition (LGWC) and the Lake
George Association (LGA). Funding from the LGA is generously provided by the Helen V.Froelich Foundation. Funding from the LGWC is provided by the NYS Department of State with funds provided under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund.
