LGA ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF SECOND ANNUAL “LAKE GEORGE
CAROLs” COnTEst
Lake George, NY – The Lake George Association, the nation’s first lake association and a pioneer in the conservation movement, held its second annual “Lake George Carols” contest for local elementary schools this year. Students took a traditional carol and adapted the words to include Lake George related topics. Wildlife, water quality, recreation – it was all fair game.
This year, there was a tie for first place, with congratulations going to:
Christina LaRose, 3rd grade, Whitehall Elementary
Shelby Keane and Michaela McCoy, 5th grade, Whitehall Elementary
Melissa Gwinup, the music teacher at Whitehall Elementary, had a number of her classes participate in the contest. Students from 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade submitted entries.
“The LGA usually works with science teachers for most of our school programs, so we are excited to be able to get another discipline, like music, involved with our efforts to protect Lake George” said Walt Lender, LGA’s Executive Director.
“This is a great way to get the younger students thinking about Lake George and the environment in a fun way” said Emily DeBolt, the LGA’s Education and Outreach Coordinator.
The LGA started the contest last year, as an effort to offer a program to the schools for younger students.
“We mainly see 7th and 8th graders on our Floating Classroom field trips, where students learn about the lake and water quality,” said DeBolt. “Hopefully, this contest helps students get interested in learning more about the lake as they get older. We need stewards to take care of Lake George, and singing about the lake is a good start for this age group.”
The prize for the contest is a party for the class of each student with a winning entry. The LGA Education and Outreach Coordinator will visit the classes in January, bringing pizza and some fun facts about Lake George to share with the students. The winning carols will also be posted on the LGA’s website.
The LGA is a not-for-profit membership organization of
people interested in working together to protect, conserve, and improve the
beauty and quality of the Lake George Basin.
