winner announced in lake george bookmark design contest

Lake George, NY – The Lake George Association (LGA), on behalf of the Lake George Watershed Conference, has announced the winner of the first annual Lake George Bookmark Design Contest. The winning design was created by Chris Walker, a 7th grader at Lake George Jr./Sr. High School. The school’s art teacher is Pam Barker.

Walker’s design, which was chosen from among 55 entries, has been printed as a 3” x 8” bookmark and has been distributed to area schools. It will also be available in the Village of Lake George Visitor Welcome Center. The front of the bookmark features Walker’s full-color scene of the lake and its hillsides. The back contains numerous facts about the Lake George watershed.

The contest was open to students in Grades 4-7 from any schools located within the Lake George watershed. Submitted designs were done in marker, crayon, colored pencil, watercolors and pastels. The only requirement was that the theme should focus on lake and watershed issues such as water quality, invasive species, aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals, streams and wetlands, pollution, lake ecology and lake health.

The prize included lunch cruise tickets for Walker and his family provided by the Lake George Steamboat Company and a gift certificate also donated by Dog Ate My Homework. The school also received a collection of books for its library focusing on Lake George and the Adirondacks.

The goal of this activity, which will become a yearly event, is to engage area students to help promote the protection and stewardship of Lake George as a truly amazing natural resource. The contest is sponsored by the Lake George Watershed Conference through the LGWC’s Public Participation and Education Committee.

Emily DeBolt, the LGA’s Education and Outreach Coordinator, headed the effort to launch the contest and was pleased with the results.

“I would say it was quite a success,” stated Debolt. “We are very grateful to all the art teachers and other teachers who had their students participate.”

The LGA is a not-for-profit membership organization of people interested in working together to protect, conserve, and improve the beauty and quality of the Lake George Basin. For more information, contact the LGA at (518) 668-3558 or check out LGA on the web at www.lakegeorgeassociation.org.
