LAKE GEORGE STUDENT WINS SCHOLARSHIP

Lake George, NY – The Lake George Association has announced that Monika LaPlante is the winner of a scholarship award from the 123 year-old non-profit.

LaPlante, who will be attending Northeastern University this fall, is a graduate of Lake George High School and a resident of Diamond Point. Her essay was chosen from several submissions for the $500 scholarship award.

The scholarship opportunity was open to graduating seniors from schools within the Lake George watershed. Eligible applicants must plan to pursue studies in an environmentally related field. LaPlante will be majoring in biology.

Students who applied for the scholarship were asked to submit an essay on the role Lake George has played in the student’s life and why the lake and its watershed should be protected for the future. LaPlante’s essay was about growing up on the lake. In her essay, LaPlante wrote “I want my children, grand-children, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren to be able to see Lake George how I see it now. To love it the way I do.”

Walt Lender, the LGA’s Executive Director, noted that LaPlante is the type of person who will make stewardship of Lake George a life-long priority.

“Monika’s passion comes from growing up on such an amazing lake,” said Lender. “Through the LGA’s Education programs, we are trying instill that same passion in all people who enjoy the lake - kids and adults, residents and visitors. We all have an impact. We all have a responsibility for protecting Lake George.”

The Lake George Watershed Conference, through its Public Participation and Education committee, provided some of the funding for the scholarship award.

The LGA is a not-for-profit membership organization of people interested in working together to protect, conserve, and improve the beauty and quality of the Lake George Basin.  Interested in becoming an LGA member?  Contact the LGA at (518) 668-3558 or check out LGA on the web at www.lakegeorgeassociation.org.
