Erosion Protection - Stormwater Management

The most common way non-point source pollution reaches Lake George is as a result of stormwater runoff. Stormwater carries with it chemicals, nutrients, sediments and other pollutants into local streams if not first absorbed by soil and vegetation or routed through storm sewers. Stormwater management aims to increase the absorption of rainwater by the soil and vegetation, and to prevent non-point source pollution from flowing into streams and later into Lake George.

Stormwater runoff from paved surfaces can lead to erosion of the shoreline as well as cause unwanted nutrients to enter Lake George. If you are planning to construct a new road or path, consider the following:

  • Design appropriate culverts, drainage diversions and ditches

  • Consider a pathway of stepping stones or a wooden walkway

  • Create twists and turns rather than a straight path

  • Consider a permeable construction of earth filter fabric and stones.
