GIS and Lake Science Intern

Position Description

The Lake George Association (LGA) is a private, nonprofit science-guided advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the water quality of Lake George as a world-class natural resource. The Lake Science and GIS Intern will learn about and have an essential role in supporting all of the GIS and lake science initiatives for the organization and will work directly with the Manager of Water Quality Research, the Geospatial Systems Analyst, and the Waterkeeper.  

 

Responsibilities

  • Participate in water quality monitoring with weekly stream sampling and storm event stream sampling 

  • Perform water sample processing for lab analysis and data entry 

  • Aid with collection and data of our algae research monitoring program 

  • Digitize historical Eurasian watermilfoil data 

  • Collect and organize historical milfoil data and assist with long-term infestation analysis 

  • Digitize streams in GIS with ground truthing using Survey123 as a part of our program to correct all streams in the Lake George watershed 

  • Assist with organizing server files and GIS file cleanup 

 

Desired Interests and Characteristics  

  • Multiple GIS courses 

  • Project or job experience using GIS 

  • Lab courses / general lab experience 

  • Willingness to work in all field conditions 

  • Comfortable swimming/snorkeling in open water 

  • Boating knowledge and experience 

  • Open to all types of experiences and tasks 

  • Ability to learn on the go  

  • Is a current student or recently graduated in the last 6 months 

 

Timeline and Compensation

  • Mid/late May – mid/end August  

  • This is an unpaid internship. Our staff will assist the candidate with applying for college credit.
